Maine Legislature

The MLA carefully monitors lobster and marine issues under consideration by the Maine Legislature, and often provides testimony at public hearings and monitors work sessions. MLA focuses on issues that affect the lobster industry as a whole, and generally will not weigh in on issues where the lobster industry is already represented by the lobster zone management councils or the Lobster Advisory Council.

The 124th Legislature began in December 2008. Many bills affecting the Maine lobster industry were discussed during the First Session of the 124th Legislature resulting in several new laws. A summary can be viewed: You can monitor the progress of the bills yourself at www.maine.gov/legis. You will need to enter the appropriate LD #. Use the "Advanced Search" option to search for an LR.

The Legislature convenes annually according to the following schedule:
  • First Session: convenes the first Wednesday of December following the general election (meets in Dec of even year, session during the odd year)
  • Second Session: convenes the first Wednesday following the second Tuesday of January in the subsequent even years. This session is reserved for budgetary matters, emergency legislation and issues brought forward by the Governor.
